THE ATTENTION!
"S/T" LP
SCALP 186
The ATTENTION! from Vienna, Austria are going to give the bleached out face of classic r'n'b a bright new robe. Those guys celebrate the mod-aesthetics of the swingin sixties in perfection. Stylish from head to toe they deliver a frantic mixture of traditional blues, soul, beat and r'n'b to all the smart dancers worldwide and re-create a sound which hasn't been heard since those glory days of bands like the ANIMALS, the YARDBIRDS and the SPENCER DAVIS GROUP.
Did you ever shake your tailfeather to the sound of Rock’n-Roll!? Well, here’s your chance – THE ATTENTION! - five lads, armed with their love for Rhythm&Blues, fuse their infectious beats, catchy riffs and haunting melodies into an explosive, one-of-a-kind mix, that makes you wanna shout and shimmy!

BIG BOBBY & THE NIGHTCAPS
LP "Big Bobby rocks & his nightcaps roll" SCALP 118
After the success of their two monster 45s
on the US label BLACK LUNG and their EP on the "Mighty Apple", the
crusaders of rawk and roll mayhem are now going to conquer the whole
planet with their longawaited debut-album "Big Bobby rocks & his
nightcaps roll". Hailing from Norfolk,Virginia, the band that features
ex members of the M-80īS and the CANDY SNATCHERS, recorded 15 brandnew
tracks for this album, which can be described best as a wild rockinī
rollercoaster ride through the garages of the last four decades.
Influenced by the rockīnīroll invasion of the Fifties, the teen-punk
spirit of the Sixties and the aggression of the punk-rock of the
Seventies, Bobby and his drunken bunch will kick ass and certainly
take no prisoners. Just imagine Jerry Lee Lewis and Jeff Conollyīs
DMZ would jam with with the CYNICS and got even joined by the SWINGINīNECKBREAKERS
and you know you can expect the hell of a smokinī slabīoīwax. |

THE BOBBYTEENS are
a trademark of high quality rock´n´roll. Obsessed by the

THE BOOZE
"Our favourite Booze" LP
SCALP 188
Ladies and gentlemen, please let us introduce you to those five angry young men from Atlanta, Georgia, ... THE BOOZE!
Known as much around town for their sharp fashion sense as for their well-crafted, mod-informed r'n'b and merseybeat, we thought that it's about time to spread the word all over the globe - THE BOOZE certainly stand out !!!
Formed in 2006, the band has already released three incredible albums, "Easybeats in modern time'', ''Straight, No Chaser" and ''Rebirth of the Cool'' and for this new longplayer we have chosen our favourites tunes from all three of them to give you an idea how truely brilliant this band really is.
It's that perfect mixture of wild ravin' r'n'b, classic 60's pop, blues, soul, garage and mod beat that makes those misfit young folks so special. Genuinely disillusioned with the overall modern state of rock 'n' roll, they create music that speaks their language. And if that language is from forty-five-odd years ago, so be it.
The band offers heartbroken lyrics set to upbeat music, with drummer Shane Human peppering the songs with lively handclaps or a tambourine for percussive decoration. Their songs are catchy as hell and full of smooth guitar tones and pretty "oo-wah" harmonies. Chad Tolliver's scratchy, vocals slightly modernize the tone, but the melodic riffs from guitarists Brian Roberts and Randy Michael bring it straight back to the '60s.
Picture yourself at Pandora's Box seeing the CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND fronted by Mr. Wilson Pickett, or being at The Marquee Club in the early sixties listening to the STONES and Bo Diddley and that's what you get with THE BOOZE!
The blues don't lie!

THE DEE RANGERS, titans of the
european beatdom and the one & only band with members living
in Stockholm & London have finally returned with a new album.
“Five spanish minutes” is a swingin’ masterpiece
of organ dominated garage-punk, that will keep your mouth open for
quite a while and your feet moving 'til it hurts. After two albums
on the legendary White Jazz label, one self-released full-length

THE ELEMENT 79 7" "My
love" SCAP 039
These days you have to look hard for a real
garage outfit, who captures the true teen-punk spirit of the sixties,
without offering us a bunch of recordings, which were made with
a mic sticking in somebodys ass. This here is the real thing! Three
mad caveteens from Colorado play the most primitive garage-punk
youīve heard in quite some time. Four teenage anthems in the tradition
of bands like the ALARM CLOCKS, CRIMSON SHADOWS or GRAVEDIGGER V.
Sadly the band has split up a few years ago, but look out for singer
Michael Dabollīs new outfit, the DOWN-N-OUTS, which has just started
where the ELEMENT 79 stopped. |

SCALP 169
Straight outta Springfield, Missouri USA (yep, that’s right, Springfield Missouri!) it's THEE FINE LINES!! Playing their first show on Halloween of 2001, the ripple effect left modsters across the country wondering just what just blew their pants off! They sharpened their teeth on Billy Childish concoctions, and formed something phenomenal… Their songs are a perfect mix of love-turned-sour lyrics and "I-gotta-do-the-Pony!" beats… so whether you just broke up with that good-for-nothin ex of yours, or your friends came over for a dance party, THEE FINE LINES will indeed satisfy!
2004 saw the release of the widely popular Self-Titled full length out on Licorice Tree Records, hitting top ten lists across the globe, and deemed "Record of the Year" on Billy Kelly's Teenage Wasteland radio show on WFMU outta New Yawk.

THE
FLASHCUBES LP ”Brilliant!” SCALP 152 Just imagine:
a dynamic rock´n´roll band, combining the most captivating
elements of the mid-60´s British Invasion and the late 70´s
new wave, occupying a really cool DMZ between the WHO,
the HOLLIES, the ROMANTICS
and the RAMONES, playing live shows
that convince you that you´ve witnessed the most exciting
rockin´pop combo on the whole friggin´planet, and making
records that fully cature the giddy thrill of those live shows.
Now imagine that all started 25 years ago, and you never even heard
of the band responsible - until now.
The band is the FLASHCUBES – the
great lost power-pop group of the 70´s, an act now rightly
referred to as “legendary” by pundits who know what
they´re talking about. And now, the FLASHCUBES are back, with
a brandnew studio album with the selfdescriptive title “Brilliant!”.
The band started in 1977 in Syracuse, NY recorded just two singles,
including one of thee power-pop classics “Christi girl”
and sadly broke up in 1980.
Through the years their legend grew and by the early 90´s
more people had heard of the FLASHCUBES than had ever actually heard
them. When RHINO RECORDS included “Christi girl” on a
power-pop retrospective called “Come out and play”,
the FLASHCUBES decided it was time to live up to their legend.
The band released a CD anthology called “Bright lights”
in 1997 and hit the road again and played in New York City, Boston,
Los Angeles and even Japan, where they recorded an amazing live
document called “Raw power-pop – Live in Japan”
which was released later on AIR MAIL RECORDINGS. The album shows
the band as energetic and invigorating as they were when they used
to share the stage with the RAMONES, the JAM, the RUNAWAYS, the
ROMANTICS and the POLICE.
That point is brought home with “Brilliant!”, the first
real studio album of the FLASHCUBES´long brilliant career.
Bursting out 12 new original tunes, “Brilliant!” makes
the case that not only were the FLASHCUBES one of the greatest power-pop
groups to make the scene in the late 70´s, they´re still
one of the very best around. An opening cover of the EDDIE &
THE HOT RODS classics “Do anything you wanna do” serves
as both a statement of intent and a gauntlet thrown. Who could resist
such a powerful call to arms? Who would wanna resist? Brilliant.
Legendary. The FLASHCUBES rule again. |

GILJOTEENS:
Without you EP 7" (SCAP 066)
Sweden is not just the Mekka of heavy-rock,
the high standard of garage-bands coming from there has a long and
impressive tradition too. Just think of bands like the NOMADS, WLYDE
MAMMOTHS, PSYHOTIC YOUTH, CRIMSON SHADOWS or STOMACH MOUTHS and
you know which importance this country had and still has for the
international garage-scene. Jens Lindberg is somewhat like the swedish
godfather of this kinda music and it was him too who brought four
bored teenagers on the right musical path. He brainwashed them by
playing all those sixties teen-punk one-hit wonders to them, pumped
heavy doses of ELECTRICPRUNES and 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS to their
minds and made them hopelessly devoted to this glorious decade of
rockīnīroll. Thatīs how the GILJOTEENS were born. Starting out as
a true bunch caveteens playing primitive 6tīsgarage-punk, they soon
developed their very own sound combining folk, beat and rīnīb influences
in their music too. So if you like bands like the STROLLERS and
the CHESTERFIELD KINGS (and who doesnīt like them), this oneīs
for you. |

THE KNEEJERK REACTIONS
"The Electrifying Sounds Of ..." LP/CD
SCALP 181/SCACD 181
Introducing England’s newest, soon to be legendary rhythm, beat & garage combo and their astonishing debut album release. Super rough, tough, raw & wild freaked out blastin’ mid 60s style RnB all the way!
The album features 12 original compositions from the fair hand of band leader Sir Bald Diddley (Guitar/Vocals). Joining Sir Bald (aka Hipbone Slim) is the one and only Bruce ‘Bash’ Brand on drums. Bruce has walloped skins for many lauded beat, rhythm n punk combos (Milkshakes, Headcoats, Holly Golightly, Masonics, etc.) and even played with Link Wray, The Pretty Things and The Downliners Sect! Gez Gerrard plays bass guitar, blows blues harmonica and adds backing/harmony vocals. Nass Bouzida (Big Boss Man, The Bongolian) guests on organ.
The band is inspired by, amongst others,…Pretty Things, Kinks, Downliners Sect, Them, Birds, Stones, Yardbirds, Sorrows, Small Faces, Outsiders, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Link Wray, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Sonics, Wailers, Larry & the Bluenotes and the Remains.
Recorded entirely in glorious mono at London’s vintage Gizzard Studios by ex Toe Rag engineer, Ed Deegan, ‘The Electrifying Sounds Of...’ is arguably the best British beat album since the original invasion days!!! Loaded with grab-your-throat guitar riffs, snarling vocals, wailing harp, and much maraca shaking, the album is proper raw-as-you-like freakbeat, fresh as a 1965 Shel Talmy produced single.

LES TERRIBLES
"Ils sont formidables!" LP/CD
SCALP 185/SCACD 185
Ready for an amazing 60's dance party? Well, don't forget to bring this platter to the DJ! This band from Paris, France plays an incredible mix of 60's garage-punk & GoGo Beat and now finally returns with their second longplayer 'Ils sont formidables!'.
The band that includes members of THE NO TALENTS, LES SYNAPSES, DUTRONC, CECILIA UND DIE SAUERKRAUTS & OPERATION S goes back to the sound of the French Beat & Roll when it was bitten by the Big Bad British Bug back in 1965. Imagine how THEM, THE SMALL FACES, THE YARDBIRDS or the early STONES would’ve sound if they were from France, never turned professionals and Van Morrison, Keith Relf or Mike Jagger were chicks. All the songs are in French, with that glamorous 'mademoiselle' accent!
The band could've been described best as the great french sixties rock band that should have existed but never did. Owing to cultural impediments and lame business practices, there were very few outstanding french rockers from that period. Ronnie Bird, Larry Greco, and a dozen others you've never heard of: LES TERRIBLES cover them all, and every song makes you wanna dance. The band rounds out their set with some originals, as well as their own french versions of some great foreign songs that never got adapted before, all done with a perfect ear for the style. Fronted by the charming and talented chanteuse Rudie this hard-working orchestre delivers the groove that gets the dance floor moving to the Swim, the Jerk, and the Hully-Gully. Les Terribles are sur scene ! (Jon Dragueur)
A Top 10 forever-must have this one is. What more can we tell you?
Tracklist:
side one

LOCAL
BOYS
"Whattheclockman" LP, SCALP 162 Sweden
is pretty much welknown for being the homebase of some of the most
important rock'n'roll, garage and pop bands Europe has to offer
these days.
Newest example for this fact are the
LOCAL BOYS. These five youngsters are giving the wrinkly face of
pop music a well deserved lifting. They celebrate power-pop with
lots of energy and their songs got that punch you will never forget.
Combining the self-ironic pop-attitude of the CEASARS
with ingenius songwriting qualities of the YUM
YUMS and the big production
& highly infectious guitar work of BRAINPOOL,
the LOCAL BOYS
are going to be the saviours of today's power-pop.
Influenced by bands like the
KINKS and
the RAMONES,
late 70's punk and the brit-pop explosion of the early 90's, they
have recorded a bunch of songs that will certainly reach the whole
body, from heart and soul to hips and feet.
Their debut-album "Whattheclockman"
is produced by Björn Olsson, who used to be one of the songwriters
in THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES
and good god, that guy made one hell
of a great job bringing the dynamic pop sound of the LOCAL
BOYS to life.
13 incredible power-pop pearls, full
of wonderful harmonies, crunchy guitars, irresistible melodies and
driving beats found their way on this album, which should be played
on the radio all day and all night long, especially in times where
good pop music got it's chance again to become (fairly) big.
Highly recommended for MANDO DIAO
fans too!

MARK & THE SPIES

MARK & THE SPIES
"Give me a look" LP/CD
SCALP 183/SCACD 183
Yessiree boys and girls! It’s here! The long awaited second album by Mark & the Spies!
The album, entitled ‘Give Me A Look’, is once again recorded by the legendary E.J. “I’ve got my mono working” Kloosterboer and filled with great jangling guitar-pop with a delicious sixties sauce.
In times where the packaging, the number of different color pressings, the most limited circulation and the crapiest sound seems to be more important than the ability to write a great, simple and dead catchy tune, MARK & THE SPIES entered the studio again to prove all you self-appointed rock’n’roll experts wrong, with their awesome blend of pure crystalline 60’s pop and classic garage-beat.

By that time almost 50% of ‘Give Me A Look’ had already been recorded. For some time it was uncertain if the album would ever get finished at all. After a few months of ‘taking it easy’, inspiration and drive came back again.
If you like the hip-shaking beats of Motown, the power of The Remains, the Zomnies and the Beatles’ ’65 period, you'll love this album.

THE MIDWAYS
"Manners, Manners" LP/CD
SCALP 170/SCACD 170
Sit up straight and look at me when I'm talkin' to you cause you're about to learn a hard lesson in etiquette from THE MIDWAYS: ladies and gents, may we present 13 raw tracks of pure 60’s garage-punk mayhem on "Manners, Manners", an album that'll send you back to charm class for carpet training!
These Canucky no-goodniks busted out in 2003 with the CD "Pay More And Get A Good Seat", followed soon afterwards by a split 7" with their Ottawa cronies The Glads. The cancer spread like a sorority-house rumour through the international garagenoscenti grapevine (with the help of fanzines and limited CD comps), and now Screaming Apple unleashes the MIDWAYS' first vinyl LP (and CD) masterstroke just when the world could use a good lesson-via-asswhup to keep decorum levels up to snuff.
Though hardly prolific, these "gringos del norte" know when to talk and when to keep their yaps shut, preferring to save their best punches for the solar plexus (or lower) and give you more sonic whallop for your record-buying pesos. As always, this platter's unashamed to flaunt the group's influences (the SONICS, all the "Back From The Grave" one-hit wonders and the CHESTERFIELD KINGS), and attitude, with the rip/snarl of "No Thanks For Nothing" and "She Gives It Up" (previewed on the "Riot On Soundflat Strip" comp), the finger-poppin' yelp of "Born Full Grown" and "Stuck In My Head", and the slow crash and burn of tracks like "Red Boots" and "She Loves Me". True to form, the Midways have larded their second payload of frantic originals with a pair of seemly covers, pure Sixties fuzz-crud staples "A Girl Like You" and "E.S.P." If these don't show you how to respect your betters and behave in decent company, then nothing can!
So after a long wait, now's your chance to hear the latest Midways discuss in its gloriously complete fullness. Get ready for some of the wyldest organ driven, fuzz-drenched beat-punk to come out of Canada ever since those glory days of the incredible GRUESOMES. A true hip-shakin' sixties garage au go-go masterpiece! Wig it and dig it, kids!

MISS CHAIN & THE BROKEN HEELS
"On a bittersweet ride" LP/CD
SCALP 187/SCACD 187
You'll either love her madly or hate her badly. Or both. And she's not alone. Disaster Silva and the Barcella Bros. are Italy's hottest pop sensatiton, THE BROKEN HEELS!!
Together they deliver their unique mixture of rawdy pop, sixties beat and eighties dreams. It ain't no party, it ain't no disco, it ain't no fooling around, just charming songs appealing to your heart, soul, feet and skin!
They're the last craftsmen of the perfect pop song. If you don't like them don't worry, you're probably dead but nobody told you yet.
Lovely Miss Chain (or shall we call her Disaster Silva, ... or maybe just Astrid?!) explains the magic of their amazing debut abum as follows, ...
"On a bittersweet ride, it's like climbing sunshine pop mountains and falling down into groovy bubblegum worlds ! Walking on garage punk streets, stomping our feet while dancing to our fav hits !
The KINKS and the BYRDS warm our heart, Phil Seymour and Dwight Twilley gave us the start, SHIVVERS and FLAMIN' GROOVIES made our teenage years, BIG STAR and RASPEBERRIES gave us smiling tears. We grew up with the Nuggets and 60ies Girl group sound, screaming "hold tight" and "I get around" ! Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, oh BADFINGERS's Baby Blue, all we wanna say : BAY CITY ROLLERS we love you !!!!!!!
We sing about holding hands and love for eachother, summertime fun and mellow ballads, underneath a nostalgic vein you will feel but each track will blow your mind for real !! up and down, inside out, come on dance, twist and shout!"
After having released three 45s, the band now comes up with 12 more impressive examples of what real power-pop is all about. This platter is a real little masterpiece. All tunes deliver the perfect blend of classic late 70's power-pop, 60's all-girl group sounds and the minimalistic charme of early punk-rock. We said it before and we will say it again, this band will be HUGE!!! If you really dig the sound of crunchy guitars, be a sucker for songs with the highest possible recognition value and go bananas for a full dose of harmonies, you need to have "On a bittersweet ride"

THE
NEDERBIETELS 7"
"On my mind/Where to run" SCAP 072
The Nederbietels hail from world’s
largest portal town: Rotterdam, Holland. They are fine purveyors
of raw European beat music and that garagey Nederbiet from Holland. The
four Nederbietels are veteran teenagers who have been around in
vintage rock’n’roll for two decades. The Herring Fab
Four is made up out of (ex-)members of The
Perverts, The Apemen and
The Ragtime Wranglers. They
dress in white provo-style, very hip but certainly not hippie.
The sound of The
Nederbietels is enriched with
the vocal harmonies of The Everly Brothers,
the crudeness of Q65 and
The Outsiders,
the skill of The Easybeats,
the humour of The Beatles and
the demented authentic wildman stage behaviour of The
Who.
The Nederbietels can easily compete with
the five top beat bands since the day Brian Jones died, as you can
hear on their three releases, the 45RPM 7” four song EP Can't
You See on their own Klootzak Records, their 7” single Kejje
Nagaan on Tear It Up Records and their brand new single released
on Screaming Apple Records by their neighbours from the East featuring
On My Mind b/w Where To Run.
The two new tracks have been recorded in
the North Spanish vintage recording studio Circo Perrotti. Where
To Run is a killer Nederbiet classic, originally performed by The
Haigs. On My Mind is the very first finished song that was written
by Dave don Porro since the demise of his former group The Perverts.
This 45 is an absolute winner!
The Nederbietels have turned into a highly
gathered top combo in the transworld sixties garage-beat scene.
Their performances at worldwide renowned clubs andfestivals like
Crossfire! London, Beat Fever - Verona, Margate Modweekender and
Primitive! - Rotterdam have fuelled that reputation. The Nederbietels
appeared on major Dutch television and were broadcasted live on
Spanish National Radio. The handsome foursome can be seen on the
famous Euro Ye-Ye Festival this summer in the north of Spain sharing
the bill with the legendary Yardbirds!
They also play in a traditional Spanish bullfighters' arena on a
festival in Medina del Campo. Later this year The Nederbietels will
be backing the infamous Monoman Jeff Conolly as occasional Lyres
for a European tour.

NEWTOWN
ANIMALS: Is your radio active? LP (SCALP141)
It's a shame, really that the notorious late 7t's punkband the DEAD
BOYS have already permanently claimed the title "young, loud
& snotty", because really, it is the best possible description
for Screaming Apple's latest, the NEW TOWN
ANIMALS.
Based outta Vancouver, Canada and often buried under piles of vintage
punk vinyl, the NEW TOWN ANIMALS are about youthful discovery of
a sound many of us weren't around to enjoy the first time. NTA influences
include relative punk obscurities like the BUZZCOCKS,
BOYS and the REZILLOS. It's been said
that they are like a "junior SMUGGLERS", but they really
have a much more vintage late 7t's Brit-punk sound and for once
that ain't a fake "punk" accent! Nick, the lead singer
is originally from England.
They were formed in 1998 from the ashes of punk-rockbands GRAVE
MISTAKE and SPLEEN by Nick, Steve
(bass) and Alex (giutar) in the suburbs of Vancouver. One year later,
Chucky (drums) from JETSET and Jeffy
(guitar) joined the group to create Vancouvers latest young rock'n'roll
tornado.
As could be guessed, their live shows are pure punk-rock thunder
as proven by their performances with the FORGOTTEN
REBELS, BRIEFS, SUPERSUCKERS,
MURDER CITY DEVILS, MAKERS
& THE SMUGGLERS.
This is their debut-album and it's licenced from mighty MINT
RECORDS. It includes one bonus track and a different cover
artwork. Already a classic ! |

NUGGETS LP "Crystalline
creations and pop sensations" SCALP 131
At last hereīs the longawaited lifesign
of those norwegian power-popīnīrollers who got famous under the
name, THE BASEMENT BRATS. Well, to be precise it just 50% of the
BRATS plus two youngsters from Halden City, where norwegian rockīnīroll
history was written a few years ago with the release of two classic
albums, "Tales from the basement" and "Bratbeat". The NUGGETS continue
exactly where the BRATS stopped. Concentrating on writing super
catchy, but highly energetic pop-tunes with a sharp punk edge and
the spirit of the sixties hanging all over it, this fourpiece has
taken the only logical development a band coming from the classic
"Bratbeat" school could go to record such a brilliant album like
"Crystalline creations and pop sensations".This album should attract
all sorts of people, from the sixties-freaks to the punk-rocker
and of course all the power-poppers worldwide.Itīs not lame pop-music,
itīs not hard-hittinīpunk, itīs not authentic sixties stuff, itīs
just a little piece of all the essential ingrediences of rockīnīroll
mixed together to a refreshing and super delicious cocktail of swinginīgood-time
music for all you real gourmets out there. |

THE PERSIAN RUGS 7"
"St.Peters Infirmary/What's a girl supposed to do?"
SCAP 074
The year ends with a big BANG!!! We're more than proud to announce the first european release by the incredible PERSIAN RUGS from Australia!
What is it you might ask, that makes the whole Screaming Apple staff go bananas about this record?
The answer is easy. It takes us back to the glory days of rock'n'roll in the early eighties when one of the most important australian bands of all time was formed, the HOODOO GURUS. And these guys (Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd and Mark Kingsmill, this time assisted by ex CRUSADERS and THURSTON HOWLERS bassplayer Kendall James to be precise) are sailing the seven seas of r'n'r during the past few years under 'false colors' by the name of the PERSIAN RUGS to unashamedly live out their predilection for the puristic teen-beat of the swingin' sixties.
Both songs on this 7" single are documents of this mania and belong without any doubt to the very best the international garagepunk guild was able to offer in 2008.
Get invited to a real fuzz-o-rama where swirlin' farfisa sounds dominating the scene.
This record is a true must-have for all fans of the GURUS and of course for all friends of the prehistoric caveman-stomp of bands like the early FUZZTONES, GRUESOMES, CHOCOLATE WATCHBAND and MUSIC MACHINE. Be a guru and listen to the stoneage romeos! |

THE PHANTOM JETS
"The Phantom Jet Set" LP
SCALP 179
Lookout! Flying atcha in their patented Rev-O-Phonic sound, it’s the Phantom Jets! This phearsome phoursome has been serving up searing-hot, flame-broiled slabs of prime-cut garage-punk grunt all around Northern California for nearly two years now! But who are they you ask? Hailing from Sacramento, California's own 'River City', this capitol group is one capital group! These Golden State go-getters have but a single goal: to get toes tappin’ and mitts clappin’ to their fuzzed-out, reverb-drenched tunes. And you'll know the Phantom Jet sound when you hear it: take minor-key 60’s garage punk, mix with a healthy dose of hip-shakin’ teen-beat, and serve with a steaming side order of brat-punk attitude! You want more? You got it! Add a dash of spy-tinged sleekness, a dollop of spooky combo organ vibe, cook in a fiery cauldron of pure rock n’ roll fury and there you have it: the primitive garage-beat stew from whence the Phantom Jets emerged! These wyld kids will rock your socks and blow your tops!
In the last year alone they have released two successful self-produced EP's and a rockin', boppin' 7” single featuring mixes of three ground pounding PJ stompers, all in futuristic MONAURAL sound! But the list of accomplishments doesn't stop there. Not only did they headline the inaugural Sacramento Horror Film Festival in 2007, they also became the first band to play California’s legendary Thunderhill Raceway...and believe us, the sound of race engines PALED next to the rockin' power of the Phantom Jets!
But don't just take it from your friendly neighborhood record label, Sacramento’s infamous 'Unknown Critic' described the Phantom Jets as "...crazy rockin’ classic 60's garage pop with a side of surf punk. Dick Dale meets The Sonics, not a bad combination. These guys are fun, exciting, energetic and talented. So hold on tight because they will indeed deliver the goods. Do yourself a huge favor if you haven't done so already: check out The Phantom Jets!” We couldn't agree more!
The Phantom Jets! They're togged to the bricks and lookin’ fer kicks as they continue to spread their brand of wyld rock'n'roll around the Golden State.
The 'Jets are:
Phantom No. 1 – Ted ‘Howlin Mad’ Murdock! Lead guitars and vocals. His licks cut harder than a Ginsu knife!
Phantom No. 2 – John ‘The Punisher’ Guinan on bass! He’s got more grooves than a stack of 45’s!
Phantom No. 3 – Sarah ‘The Ice Queen’ Hudson on organ! The fetching femme fatale of the Farfisa!
Phantom No. 4 – Frank ‘The Belgian Brute’ Temmerman on the drums! Someone call the fuzz, there’s a beating going on behind those tubs!
Yes, they'll shred like Krueger and howl like cougars, so get on board and come fly with thee wyldest outfit this side of the American River. The Phantom Jets: moving at the speed of sound…destination: EXCITEMENT!
Screaming Apple Records is proud to release their debut-album, “The Phantom Jet Set”, a true little masterpiece of real 60’s buzz saw garage-punk, which should complete the record collection of every STAGGERS, WITCH DOCTORS, SATELLITERS, early CYNICS, SONICS, SWAMP RATS and DEL-VETTS afficinado on our planet.

THE POWER-CHORDS
"... think I'm gonna" LP
SCALP 175
"If you stretch your memory far enough, you can probably remember a time when "pop" was still a three-letter word. Before TRL and Ryan Seacrest and teen actresses-turned-singers, pop was actually a legitimate art form.
For the members of Chula Vista, California, band The Power-Chords, it still is. And if it isn't, that's your problem. These guys take pride in stuffing 10 pounds of melodies into a 5-pound bag. In fact, from the sound of their debut single, "Unattached Strings" (out November 7 on Mean Buzz Records), these guys eat, sleep and breathe pop hooks.
"We don't like to stray too far from the rock and roll pop song format because it's a common language, although we try to twist it a bit by throwing in a weird chord here or there", says singer/guitarist Jon Hammer. "But let’s face it, the kids today need some energy, the kind of energy that was being exerted in the late ’70s, as exemplified by bands like the Clash and the Ramones, punk bands that started playing fast. The Buzzcocks are revolutionary for essentially making 'pop-punk' long before it was a generic term for modern commercial-radio punk music."
What makes the music of The Power-Chords so striking is the band's ability to channel the grimy, blood-and-piss-soaked anarchy of ’77-era punk through the solid song structure of influences like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and the Zombies. The result is something of an anomaly in the punk world – music that sounds as wild and carefree and couldn’t-give-less-of-a-shit as The Queers, but is bound tightly with thought-out chord changes and melody lines so sweet they could give you a cavity.
It’s simple and smart, rebellious while proudly adhering to traditional form. The name "The Power-Chords" couldn't be more, or less, ironic.
In the band's short career, The Power-Chords have already raised eyebrows up and down the west coast. The boys have been nominated for a San Diego music awards in each of their three years together. But as their music suggests, winning accolades is hardly the goal for The Power-Chords.
"For me, playing shows to people exited for our music is the highlight", says bassist Craig Barclift. "It’s a great feeling to see someone going crazy for the music that you’re playing."
"Nothing can touch the fact that a few kids have told us that we gave them hope in music today," Hammer says proudly.
As The Power-Chords prove on their debut release, there is hope indeed.
12 simply amazing power-pop-punk pearls speak for themself. "... think I'm a gonna" is a true must have for all friends of euphoric, two minutes pop anthems and fans of bands like THE BUZZCOCKS, UNDERTONES and ADVERTS.

THE PRANKS
"Modern communication" CD
SCAlp/CD 176
Where Grunge was born at the beginning of the 90's, a new band gets ready to establish modern power-pop now. Seattle, home of such illustrious acts like MUDHONEY, NIRVANA, SOUNDGARDEN and PEARL JAM is now primarily the homebase of the BOSS MARTIANS, which brings us straight to the PRANKS, whose debut-album is supposed to be praised here, simply because the creative force behind the band is no other than Erik Foster, the "little" brother of BOSS MARTIANS mastermind Evan Foster, who by the way is as well responsible for the superb production of the album.
The PRANKS belong to the very few exceptional acts these days, who have really understand how to use the "golden key" of power-pop to open the right door. The perfect mixture of classic late 70's power-pop made popular by bands like the PLIMSOULS, NERVES & PAUL COLLINS’ BEAT and the untamed pop-punk of the same decade, brought to us by, for example the BUZZCOCKS and the POINTED STICKS, paired with the breathtaking energy, which characterised MR.T.EXPERIENCE and the early GREEN DAY in the 90's, led them straight to "gate one" and the involved first prize.
"Modern Communication" lives from the enormous drive all the songs own, from a production which perfectly fits to the sound of the band, from the loud, buzzing guitars and most of all from their ability to write great, dead catchy tunes. Just listen to the album opener, "Your world falls down around you", 120 seconds of pure pop heaven, without drowning in stereotypes and sounding too sweet and you will understand what we are talking about. Who’s able to clothe a pop-tune in a tight punk-rock suit surely deserves an award. And this should definitely happen to these popmeisters, called the PRANKS, cuz what we got here is a power-pop band that like to rock. The "Yummy" for the best modern power-pop band goes to ... THE PRANKS.
Time to take a bow!!!
A vinyl version of the album will be available on Screaming Apple Records later this fall.

THE
REAL BAD NEWS
Black & White & Red All Over LP (SCALP 157)
Here´s the latest and greatest
thing to come out of Sacramento since I don´t know what. It´s
this mystery band called THE REAL BAD
NEWS with their debut album "Black
& White & Red All Over". This act, which reminds us so
much of the legendary UNTAMED YOUTH,
can really lay down the 60´s frat thing with a lot of feeling
and guts. They were discovered by Deke Dickerson while they opened
for him in California´s capital city. Give a listen - it´s
straight forward rock´n´roll with a decided bent toward
the pre-BEATLES sixties (justdig
all that glorious organ and tenor saophone). And man, they even have
their own theme song. Not much is known about the band, but if you
listen to the brilliant vocals, you seem to hear Deke Dickerson singing.
Hmm, is there maybe even a closer contact between him and the band,
than we all thought?! Who know´s. Fact is, that the album got
engineered and produced by Deke Dickerson and that he´s written
the liner notes too, so let´s listen to what he´s saying
about them. " In the last couple of years, "garage rock"
has made the headline with such acts as the WHITE STROKES. I haven´t
really taken a fancy to any of these bands, personally. To me, they
just don´t have any HEART or any SOUL. I had just about given
up on this "garage rock" phenomenon until that fateful night
at Old Ironsides in Sacramento, California, when a band called THE
REAL BAD NEWS open up for me.
These guys were awesome! They were a real garage band, but they weren´t
a cookie-cutter-cover band like those 80´s Vox Wig TM bands.
They wrote great original songs, like "We´re the Bad News",
"Don´t get me wrong" and "Cast the fist stone".
And when they did do a cover, they would take a great song like Ray
Charles´ "Leave my woman alone" and turn it into a
raving garage classic. The even took Faron Young´s country classic
"Hello walls" and made it into a RIVIERAS-style organ frat
pounder! These guys are geniuses! I decided to take this group of
miscreants into the studio, to claim their own slice of the"garage
rock" pie. If those guys don´t hit it big, I´ll eat
my hat! They have all the necessary ingredients - Nate Forrets´s
excellent singing, Henry Dantill´s blazing guitar work, Leo
Sutter´s harmonies and solid rhythm guitar and of course the
secret weapon, the "cuteness factor" of Billy "the
Kid" Lakeson that is sure to make these guys the next HANSON.
I´m telling you, these guys cannot miss! Any band who writes
a song about Krispy Kreme donuts are kings in my book. I hope that
you feel the same way." So you can clearly see, Deke Dickerson
is mad about these guys, and I´m sure if he would not have been
in the UNTAMED YOUTH, he would try to join them. A true trademark
of quality this certainly is! |

Screaming Apple is doing you a little favour kiddies. Get your pop's
compass and find the new RIPPERS album 'Tales full of black soot'
today, 'cuz there might be no tomorrow!
The wyldest r´n´b band on this planet has returned with
their second full-length. THE RIPPERS
are from Sardinia and follow a long
tradition of italian garage outfits in the past 20 years. Totally
devoted to all the "no-hit wonders" from the sixties,
they play an insane mixture of primitive garage-punk and ravin'
rhythm'n'blues. Their main influence is the pure beat mayhem of
bands like the PRETTY THINGS, DOWNLINER
SECT, Q 65 and the MISSING
LINKS and you can easily compare
them to all those great eighties garage combos like the CRAWDADDYS,
TELL TALE HEARTS and WYLDE MAMMOTHS.
Havin' released 45s on some of the coolest labels around, like H-RECORDS,

SHAKE YOUR ASS and
a debut album which got ravin' reviews all over the place (the vinyl

THE RIPPERS
"S/T" SCACD 148
Please get ready for the wyldest r´n´b band on this
planet. THE RIPPERS are from Sardinia and follow a long tradition
of italian garage outfits in the past 15 years. Totally devoted
to all the "no-hit wonders" from the sixties, they play
an insane mixture of primitive garage-punk and ravin' rhythm'n'blues.
Their main influence is the pure beat mayhem of bands like the PRETTY
THINGS, DOWNLINER SECT, Q
65 and the MISSING LINKS and
you can easily compare them to all those great eighties garage combos
like the CRAWDADDYS, TELL
TALE HEARTS and WYLDE MAMMOTHS.
After havin' released just one incredibly raw and puristic 7",
labels from allover the world tried to sign them to record their
debut album, but we here at the Screaming Apple headquarters are
the lucky ones who made it in the end. The LP was sold out in a
few months, so we decided to re-release the album this timeon CD
and we have even included their first 3 now out of print 7"
EPs as a bonusfor everyone out there who has just discovered the
greatness of this band. A total of 25 songs for your listening pleasure.
The RIPPERS don't want to create something

the music of this decade. A bunch of caveteens is

THE
RIVIERA PLAYBOYS LP/CD
"Ambassadors of rock'n'roll" SCALP/SCACD 160 It's
time to introduce you to the new ambassadors of rock'n'roll and
believe us, we're talking about the real thing! Here comes this
band that has captured the musical phenomenon which came creeping
out of millions of garages from the late 50's to the mid 60's and
carries it forward into today's dreary world of lame mainstream
rock and inedible lo-fi bullshit. Calling Rochester, New York their
home, THE RIVIERA PLAYBOYS represent
the epitome of a new breed of 60's garage rock'n'roll combos. The
band that includes ex members of THE
CHESTERFIELD KINGS, THE PROJECTILES,
THE INSIDERS and SUSAN
& THE SURFTONES delivers
timeless music that has a powerfully menacing quality, and is best
described in their own words as "raw, electrified r'n'r!".
Driven by fuzz & reverb drenched guitars and wailin' organ sounds,
all their songs got this distinctive primal approach, but the music
still has this veritable melodic content and amazing vocal harmonies.
They guide us through their wonderful own little musical world,
a place where you can still find those primitive garage-punk rituals
done by prehistoric cavemen banging big rocks together, a place
where people still wiggle to the classic sixties beat, a place where
the beauty of twangin' folk sounds is still respected, a place where
people don´t have to be ashamed to be devoted to traditional
r'n'r. If you can't get enough of all the "pebbles" and
"nuggets" from the roaring 60's and you adore the early
CHESTERFIELD KINGS and
the MAHARAJAS,
you certainly don't wanna live without this masterpiece of the "ambassadors
of rock'n'roll", the mighty RIVIERA
PLAYBOYS!

SMUGGLERS
LP "Mutinity In Stereo" SCALP 155 Welcome
to the wild world of the Smugglers. Whether it be playing smoky
clubs around the world, releasing countless slabs of hot wax on
only the finest international indie labels, or churning out hilarity
in their infamous on-line tour diaries, the Smugglers have but one
goal: TO ENTERTAIN. From Vancouver, BC Canada, The Smugglers are
one of the longest lasting, most energized and entertaining bands
to ever burst from their beloved frozen north. Forming back in 1988,
Canada’s greatest ambassadors of rock ‘n’roll
music weren’t supposed to make it out of their parents’
basement, let alone into the twenty first century, but here they
are, ready to rock and never stop.
The Smugglers formed at Hillside Secondary School in West Vancouver,
BC, Canada. Heavily under the influence of Black Label beer, hashish,
and the raw rock’n’roll sounds of the Sonics, the Cramps
and the Stones, the five teenagers were dubbed "The Smugglers"
by their high school buddy Nardwuar The Human Serviette.
From their ugly beginnings in church basements,
malls and warehouses opening for heroes like the Gruesomes and NoMeansNo,
the band slowly grew up to weld their influences of great punk and
rock’n’roll into a wildly energetic show all their own.
The Smugglers took their sweat, suits and boots on the road and,
a decade and a half later, continue to tour to every pocket of North
America, as well as sojourns into the uncharted wilds of Japan,
Europe, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.
The Smugglers
live show is a legendary tour de force of energy and charisma, involving
wild antics and audience participation with such now-beloved stunts
as the dance contest (complete with a trophy to the winner - over
500 given out in more than twenty different countries), kissing
contests, and Smugglers "dream dates".
Over their adventurous career, The Smugglers
have bounced from label to label, always independent, including
Vancouver’s Nardwuar Records, Seattle’s PopLlama Products,
and Vancouver’s Mint Records. From Mint, the Smugglers have
licensed records around the world to such labels as Berkeley, California’s
Lookout Records, Tokyo’s 1+2 Records, Australia’s Corduroy
Records and Spain’s Imposible Records. All tolled, the Smugglers
have amassed a mighty eight full length albums and several singles,
EPs and compilation tracks worth of loud and snotty vinyl and CDs.
The Smugglers
have always been lucky enough to work with great producers including
Conrad Uno ("At Marineland" 1991, "Atlanta Whiskey
Flats" 1992, "In The Hall Of Fame" 1993, "Wet
Pants Club" 1994), Mass Giorgini ("Selling The Sizzle"
1996) and Kurt Bloch ("Buddy Holly Convention" 1997, "Growing
Up Smuggler" 1998, "Rosie" 2000). “Mutiny In
Stereo”, The Smugglers latest record, is self-produced and
is their best yet!
It´s the return of ambassadors of
love, the uncrowned canadian party kings and one of the very best
live bands on this planet. Hallelujah! Good time music for the whole
family. Enjoy!

THE INCREDIBLE STAGGERS VS. WILD EVEL & THE TRASHBONES 7"
SCAP 077
Monster time!!! THE STAGGERS are the wyldest garage-punk outfit Europe has to offer these days. Those madmen from Austria deliver an awesome version of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" that will make you jump & shout.
Insane vocals of Wild Evel, one of thee most enthusiastic frontmen you can find in todays' beatcombos. Killer guitars & rhythm section combined with the swirling Farfisa organ sound produced by always charming Lightning Iris, this is teen-beat at it's best!!!
On the flip Wild Evel presents his newest creation, WILD EVEL AND THE TRASHBONES!!!! And what else can you expect than totally freaked-out teen garage punk at it's loudest! Deep in the tradition of the US punk of the sixties and 80's swedish garage (sounding a lot like THE STOMACH MOUTHS) they turn Art Guy's 60's punk classic "Where you gonna go?" into a real thunderstorm of fuzz. THIS IS THE SHIT!!!! Be fast my fuzzfriend, this platter is limited and will sell like hot-cakes!!

SUZY & LOS QUATTRO
"Stick with it" LP
SCALP 178
"Ever wondered what The Dictators crossed with The Records with Brenda Lee singing might sound like? Well, you stopped by the right place. These guys ain't dealing in nostalgia. This album features future classics that could actually please all of the people all of the time".
This above is an excerpt from the liner notes on Suzy & Los Quattro's new album, "Stick With It" (WPR/Screaming Apple 2008), penned by Lindsay Hutton, founder of the legendary magazine The Next Big Thing and collaborator in MOJO or SOUNDS.
"Stick With It" is a great step forward in the band's career, proving they can beat any obstacle after two years of line-up changes. Now working as a four-piece, the band plans an extensive tour that will take them to 9 different countries.
Musically speaking, the band sticks to their magic formula of catchy pop songs fuelled by crunchy guitars, you only have to listen to Crazy On The Phone or Because Of You to realize they still have it when it comes to writing immediate hits. But something has changed, this time the production and arrangements are taken up a notch, without losing a grip on punkpop. This time Suzy & Los Quattro have broadened their horizons to a lot of the sounds they worship so much as die-hard music fans. H.A.T.E! is soaked wet in glam, winking an eye to bands like The Sweet, Slade and featuring some guitars likely to remind you of "Billion Dollar Babies" by Alice Cooper. Too Late will get your feet on the dance-floor like the disco Blondie did in the 70's and The Sounds have done recently. But Suzy & Los Quattro don't forget their 60's pop heritage, penning the beautiful ballad Maybe I'm Wrong, that would surely make Phil Spector proud with two pianos, strings and horns playing under Suzy Chain's voice, shining through every track of this album like never before. Of course they didn't miss their date with new-wave in cuts like Go On, which might remind you of Baby Let's Twist with Chrissie Hynde on lead vocals. And for the more straight-forward crowd, tracks like Comeback Superstar will please the surfers and Rock Boys (dig those harmonies!) will do it for the rock'n'rollers. Special mention to Donna Donna, an amazing track with one of the catchiest choruses ever, dedicated to Donna, a rescue dog that recently became part of the Quattro-Chain family, and that will be linked to animal rights camapaigns.
And watch out for the ending, Henry Rollins, easily the best proof of a new level of versatility the band has reached. A fully a capella track done exclusively with Suzy and B.B. Quattro's vocals and dedicated to the tough and muscled DC singer.
This album consolidates all the things that Suzy & Los Quattro promised on their first album, "Ready To Go!" (2004), which got rave reviews and was licensed in Germany and Japan. During 2005 they embarked on their 2 week Japanese "Lipstick To Japan Tour", which confirmed their "pop idol" status in the land of rising sun, selling out two nights in Tokyo and receiving an almost beatlesque warm welcome. You can see it for yourself on their Lipstick To Japan video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vygzxCQHViU
This tour was followed by a compilation of all their singles, "The Singles" (2006), a record that kept them on the road again, playing two times at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool, where John Otway from the BBC included their show on his top 10 of the festival (out of 150 bands on the bill!).
So for any Ramones / Blondie / Beach Boys / Raspberries fan, here's your new favourite band!

THE
THANES CD "Downbeat & folked up" SCACD 147
We here at the S.A. headquarters are so damned proud to present
the brandnew album of the scotish beat legends the THANES,
we can´t hardly find the right words for it.
The THANES have be around since 1987
and certainly belong to the very few really important bands of today´s
garage and beat scene.
Hailingfrom Edinburgh, they have released tons of records on the
coolest labels around, such as SUNDAZED,
CORDUROY, MISTY
LANE, LARSEN and DISTORTIONS
to name but a few.
With their new LP "Downbeat and Folked Up", The THANES
are once more travelling the distance, or be that as it may, staying
the same (that means remaining true to themselves) while constantly
changing, and, fortunately for us, they seem to be getting better
all the time. The THANES of this ultra-modern
age conjure up ever more new and always interesting twists and turns
from their basic garage band vision. The line-upfor the past several
years remains unchanged: Lenny Helsing - guitar & leadvocal,
Mal Kergan - bass guitar & vocal, Angus McPake - organ &
guitar, and Mike Goodwin - drums. On "Downbeat and Folked Up"
the general terrain appears familiar, yet somehow the sounds from
within are coming over clearer and stronger than before. They are
extending their collective antennae, reaching but further, sometimes
bringing a new reaffirmation of a deeperfolk-rock stance with evocative
vocal harmonies and a jangling 12-string: towit there are covers
by Bob Dylan, and The Beau Brummels, played out with trueheart and
soul. A few choice examples of the group's mega-fixation with groups
that existed in Holland thirty-odd years ago have also been selected
for inclusion. One of the best is their interpretation of "I'm
A Fool" originally performed by The Sandy Coast. Stomping and
gyrating is also encouraged with original beat-style creations such
as "It Can Never Be", "The Next One", and the
furious buzz of the LP opener "That's The Story Of Your Life".
No other current band is able to combine all these musical elements
of the sixties insuch a perfect way.
Recorded atthe famous TOE RAG Studios in London with Mr. Liam Watson
behind the mixingdesk, "Downbeat & folked up" is masterpiece
of modern beat musicand will not just take the hearts of all the
sixties-devotees by storm. One hell of an album!

THURSTON HOWLERS: Lodge Party LP (SCALP
142)
Is your bag a swingin' lifestyle? Do ya' dig brain splittin' reverb
fracas? Or even the menacing mindbending tones of fuzz and grind?
Do you partake in stompin' booze-soaked topless-a-go-go-frat house
debauchery?
Then it's time to get introduced to those fez wearing australian
party kings, called the THURSTON HOWLERS,
who finally come up with their debut-album "Lodge Party".
Extremely influenced by the North West sound of the WAILERS,
KINGSMEN and SONICS,
this record is a classic mix of early 6t's frat-rock, wylde garage-punk
and swingin' instrumentals.
The THURSTON HOWLERS are some kinda australian "garage all-star"
team,including members of the CRUSADERS,
HEKAWIS, FINKERS
and INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOYS.
This is a perfect dance record with great girlie backups by the
lovely MARYANNES, which should keep every party swinging. For all
those who miss FORTUNE & MALTESE.
Let's have a martini. |

TV IDOLS:
17, desperate and all messed up LP (SCALP 135)
Do you remember the PHANTOM RATS? These
guys have put out some of the most impressive punkīnīroll platters
of the nineties and together with bands like TEENGENERATE & the
5,6,7,8īS they were responsible for the beginning of the japanese
rockīnīroll invasion in America and Europe. Unfortunately they broke
up in 1997, but singer, songwriter and guitar player Kazand drummer
Tetsu couldnīt do without playing and formed this new and even stronger
outfit called the TV IDOLS. 17, desperate and all messed up is their
debut albumand itīs the hell of a record. While the PHAMTOM RATS
had a strongrockīnīroll influence, the TV IDOLS are more fixed on
late 7tīs, earlyeighties US punk, like the DEAD BOYS and the early
REPLACEMENTS. Great songs, catchy hooks, a hard edged guitar sound
and a real driving rhythmsection, that describes the TV IDOLS sound
best. 12 powerful and energetic punk-rock anthems including covers
of the DEAD BOYS and the RICH KIDS make thisrecord one of the punkinī
highlights of the new millennium. |

THE TWISTAROOS
"Twisted!" LP
SCALP 189
OK! Let's set the record straight. It's the YUM YUMS which become THE TWISTAROOS when they're getting a little tired of doing that good old bubblegum/power-pop thing, starting to play soulful rhythm'n'blues and rock'n'roll, kinda like the DETROIT COBRAS and the FLESHTONES, so you know that you need to have this record anyway!!!
THE TWISTAROOS was conceived one late night at Sin City, a bar in one of the more shady areas of Moss, Norway. The atmosphere was irresponsibly high whipped up by way too many cocktails. The primitive, seductive rythms of garage rock, soul and rocknroll had long ago turned the dance floor to a vipers nest of transpiration exchanging sinners, and it was then the slender singer Ms Goodvibe sporting an outrageously short hemline and an advanced intoxication wiggled up against the no less animated guitar player Morty Mortaroo for the occation impeccably dressed in shirt tails ever so wild and with a multi colored lamp shade on his head. Lets start a dance band, she said, licking her blood red lips. You know, not disco or anything, but the dirty kind that makes things move down below! She looked hopefully into his eyes while finishing yet another double Sin City Cocktail Delight. Seconds earlier Mortaroo had ruled the dance floor, juggling a myriad of young beauties, and it didnt take long before the immortal sounds of Louie Louie appeared in his head: Dadada-Dada-Dadada-Dada Yupp, he knew exactly what she was talking about, so he pushed the lamp shade back with an affirmative blink of the eye: Dance band - you got it! No sooner said than done Otto Gamstaroo, a well known to the music police in Moss, was brought on board as drummer. Der Gamster is a guy who treats his drums as he treats the men who gets in his way, he beats the hell out of them with a Bo Diddley beat. I brought a bass player, Otto said when the band was to make their debut show. He pointed towards a shady-looking gentleman at the end of the bar, already halfway through a stiff drink. This was not to be the last time Otto brought along a friend from the rhythm section circle in town. It was easier that way. They came, did their job, got paid and left. No names no conversation. THE TWISTAROOS will do anything for money. They play weddings, birthdays, funerals, births. All kinds of parties! So book them now; they have expensive habits and need the cash!

THE WILDEBEESTS: "Annie get
your gnu," LP (SCALP 167)
Look out, here come those Wildebeests
again with a whole new bunch of tunes to make you the listener perk
up and take heed. Whether it be 'rivvum and bloos', 'tank pok',
'instro-mental larkabout', or 'skewed sick-stays styled beat-noise',
these Lairds can KO with the best of them, fuck it, let's make with
the fact that The Wildebeests, the band that features (ex)-members
of the MILKSHAKES,
KAISERS
and THANES,
can knock any and all others off the blocks anyday, anywhere, and
at anytime.
After a pile of single, EP and album releases on Norton Records,
Sympathy For The Record Industry and Smartguy Records in the US
the Wildebeests have returned to Germany and Screaming Apple (who
coincidently released their first single way back in 1995) to release
this the groups 4th long-player and has taken many a long long while
to arrive (often thought to have been lost in the peat bogs deep
in the Tripe valley) and for that you have not to thank the efforts
of the 3 goons who, heretoforeandthereafter, should be referred
to as the artists, but for the efforts of record company blunders
and problemos reaching near and far across the desert-scapes of
days, nights, weeks, nay months I say, bouncing here and there almost
resulting in a veritable record label tennis! The Lairds of the
Boss Racket themselves had almost given up hope of this LP ever
seeing the needle of a record player...
Holy gnu,
its years now since the artists first threw this lot of rumbling
artefacts onto magnetic tape after at the very least 3 long minutes
of rehearsal and preparation. What could be better? Well just listen
to the dim simplicity of 'Lucinda' and the untamed beauty of 'Your
Mind' to say nothing of the wracked emotion of 'It Ain't Right'
to get the measure of what these sensitive artists had to wade thru
in order to bring their fans a steaming product of damn near perfection.
The CD version of this new gnu-sound classic and bluesy beat-punk
masterpiece will be out sometime later this spring.

THE WONTONS 7" "Karaoke
night" SCAP 058
Dressed in ever-fashionable kung-fu uniforms,
the Wontons are a rockin' power trio composed of Sifu Dean (guitar/vox),
Sifu Randy (bass/vox), and Sifu Matt (drums/vox). They describe
their sound as "All-You-Can-Eat Rock 'n' Roll", a buffet of fifties
rock and seventies punk, served with a Chinese twist! Dean used
to play in the 1-4-5s, a garage rock combo that released numerous
records, and Matt is also the driving force behind Houston's Junior
Varsity. The Wontons have a 4-city Japanese tour planned in June,
and a U.S. tour to follow later this year. They have put together
four of their most deadly, action-packed trash-rock anthems for
their Screaming Apple debut, and we guarantee that you'll be hooked
onto their M.S.G.-flavored tunes after just one listen!

THE WOODY PEAKERS
"Beat solution" CD (only!!!)
SCACD 180
If you just dip deep enough into the grotto of 80’s garage-punk you’ll still find some incredible treasures of this genre which certainly need to get introduced to all you garage heads around the globe.
One of these “lost jewels” are the WOODY PEAKERS from Pordenone, Italy.
The band that included members of RUNNING STREAM started in 1986 playing wild ravin’ fuzzed-out beat-punk with moody garage vibe to it and released a split 45 with a Ska-band named MAD JOKE the same year. Particularly well-known they got for their stylish look. Their mop tops and chelsea boots scared all their neighbours.
After a few line-up changes they found a constant formation which played from autumn '87 until spring/summer '92. In these years the WOODY PEAKERS were: Vetriolo (drums+vocals), Gegè (guitar+vocals), Spazzola (bass+vocals) and Ugly (organ+maraccas).
1988 they decided to record their first LP which was recorded predominantly in their rehearsal-space, a mouldy garage in the hometown Pordenone on a 4 track portable tape-machine.
It was the perfect place for a garage band to record and the band loved the result. The sound was 100% authentic!
The album was full of crude’n’primitive teen-punk from the 60’s, but also offered some of the most amazing moody garage-howlers you can think of.
The LP was released the same year on Vinyl Salvage Records based in Udine, as some kinda promotion for the collectors 2nd hand record shop they had just opened.
1989 garage music got “officially” buried by trendy music companies and even more trendy media people, but the WOODY PEAKERS couldn’t care less and a few months later, early 1990 they released a 4 track EP (with circulation of 500 copies) on their own Peak Records label.
They band continued playing for another year or so, but in 1992 they decided to split up.
Sixteen years later Screaming Apple thought that it was about time to re-release the whole musical legacy of the band (their one and only album and their 45) for the first time on CD and even include 5! bonus tracks, which have never been put out before on one compilation.
“Beat solution” is a real classic of the late 80’s garage-punk mayhem. It offers 21 tracks of pure organ-drenched, fuzz-loaded teen-beat insanity that could’ve been easily recorded in 1966!!!
Besides their stunning originals they’ve recorded a bunch of real wylde covers, such as “Writing on the wall”, “Ricordarmi”, ”Blackout of Gretely” and “It’s a crying shame” to name but a few.
So if you still go mad when you fave DJ plays the LARRY & THE BLUE NOTES, the ALARM CLOCKS, the UNRELATED SEGMENTS, the SICK ROSE, the CHESTERFIELD KINGS and the MIRACLE WORKERS, you absolutely need this album!
Totally limited to 500 copies only! Get it, before it’s gone … FOREVER!!!

THE YUM YUMS
"Whatever rhymes with baby" LP
SCALP 182
Let's consider the three minute pop-song for a second or two: so simple in it's construction, so inscrutable in it's perfection, so many who have tried and failed!
For me the YUM YUMS have been THE band to watch over the past few years, their perfect (yep, it's true) take on the "power-pop" thang is a source of constant pleasure and amuzement. Joss Hutton Bucketfull of Brains.
A pretty good description that is, but what more can we say about Europe's absolutely best power-pop band?
They deliver good time pop music that makes your next party an unforgettable event. And now those unbeatable pop-meisters from Norway finally come up with their third and long awaited full-length album.
One of The YUM YUMS strongest points have proved to be their ultra catchy mid-tempos (remember their massive hit "Be With Me") and on this new album "Sugar Rush" and "If I Ever See you Again" will get your toes tapping on the floor and most likely, a big smile on your face. The production of this record has been fully analogic, resulting in a crispy and crunchy sound that we fans appreciate after the rather "polite" production of their last album "Blame It On The Boogie". Tina Lucchesi (The Bobbyteens) contributes on "Rock And Roll Tonight" and the new line-up features an amazing Egil Stemkens (Popgun) on bass -with some of the most original and creative bass lines ever recorded on a punkpop album- and the definitive inclusion of Norwegian female pop idol Vibeke Saugestad on keyboards, backing vocals and percussion.
What we get here is REAL POWER-POP, with the word power written in capital letters. Putting together the essential ingrediences of the music of the RAMONES, the PLIMSOULS and OHIO EXPRESS, the 6t's and the 7t's, bubblegum and punk, pop and rock'n'roll, they deliver their very own YUMMY sound.
So, what we're talking about is extremely catchypop-music with a fat, rockin' guitar sound, well executed vocal-lines, ridin'-on-the-waves drums and a crunchy punk feel to it. It simply makes you feel good!
